Novel Region Fidelity

novel_region_fidelity asks whether newly exposed parts of the scene are rendered plausibly when the reference camera reveals content that was not visible in the first frame.

  • fidelity on regions that become newly visible over time
  • masked prediction-vs-reference agreement on those newly exposed regions
  • not a direct camera-control metric and not a pure hallucination detector
  1. The metric requires a reference video with at least two sampled frames.
  2. WorldAtlas derives “seen” regions from forward/backward Farneback flow between the first reference frame and each later reference frame.
  3. It then defines the “novel” region as the complement of a dilated seen mask, optionally removing dynamic foreground areas supplied by mask_path or dyn_masks.npz.
  4. For each later frame, the prediction is resized to the reference resolution and compared to the reference only on the novel mask.
  5. The frame score is the mean of the available masked components. Masked PSNR uses the mask-weighted MSE, then a linear map into [0,1][0, 1]:
MSEt=1∣Mt∣ C∑p∈Mt∑c(Itpred(p,c)−Itref(p,c))2(1)\mathrm{MSE}_{t} = \frac{1}{|M_{t}|\,C} \sum_{p\in M_{t}} \sum_{c} \bigl( I^{\mathrm{pred}}_{t}(p,c) - I^{\mathrm{ref}}_{t}(p,c) \bigr)^{2} \tag{1} PSNRt=20log⁡10255−10log⁡10(MSEt)(2)\mathrm{PSNR}_{t} = 20\log_{10}255 - 10\log_{10}(\mathrm{MSE}_{t}) \tag{2} stpsnr=clamp[0,1] ⁣(PSNRt−1030)(3)s^{\mathrm{psnr}}_{t} = \mathrm{clamp}_{[0,1]}\!\left( \frac{\mathrm{PSNR}_{t}-10}{30} \right) \tag{3}
Masked DINOv2 similarity on masked crops uses the same $[0,1]$ cosine map:
stdino=clamp[0,1] ⁣(z(Ctpred)⋅z(Ctref)+12)(4)s^{\mathrm{dino}}_{t} = \mathrm{clamp}_{[0,1]}\!\left( \frac{\mathbf{z}(C^{\mathrm{pred}}_{t})\cdot\mathbf{z}(C^{\mathrm{ref}}_{t})+1}{2} \right) \tag{4} st=mean({stpsnr, stdino})(5)s_{t} = \mathrm{mean}\bigl(\{s^{\mathrm{psnr}}_{t},\,s^{\mathrm{dino}}_{t}\}\bigr) \tag{5}
A missing component is dropped from the mean. If $\mathrm{MSE}_{t}\le 10^{-12}$, then $s^{\mathrm{psnr}}_{t}=1$.

6. Frame scores are weighted by novel-region coverage wtw_{t}. 7. The raw metric is the weighted average across valid later frames:

Snovel=∑twt st∑twt(6)S_{\mathrm{novel}} = \frac{\sum_{t} w_{t}\,s_{t}}{\sum_{t} w_{t}} \tag{6}
  1. Current normalization is direct bounded scaling in [0,1][0, 1].
ItemCurrent implementation
Prediction inputsampled prediction video frames
Reference inputsampled reference video frames
Annotation inputoptional ignore masks from mask_path or dyn_masks.npz
Raw outputone scalar weighted mean score in [0, 1]
Normalized outputsame bounded scalar under the default config
Details payloadframe_scores with frame_index, coverage, psnr_component, dino_component, score, plus frame index metadata
Failure modereturns raw = null, normalized = null, and an error string when no valid novel-region scores can be formed
  • Current aggregation: official in image_static, image_dynamic, and video_static when a numeric score is produced; pure image references usually return unavailable.
  • Like the seen-region metric, tiny masks are skipped instead of becoming zeros.
